Chapter Thirteen

After an exhilarating ride, Maggie returned Blue to her stall. Her emotions had been mixed-up throughout the day, which forced her to sit on a hay bale and take stock of her life. Flashes of home sunk in, and a release of tears spilled down her cheeks.

She needed to get herself together before dinner and sighed with thoughts of Trent. The connection wasn’t the same with Kevin as with Trent. What had she been thinking, spending time with Kevin and accepting his flowers. Today her head got screwed back on straight.

Tears wiped away, she wished for a mirror to check her appearance before returning to the house. The screen door slammed a sign Trent was outside and would be waiting for her.

In the bright sunlight, she shielded her eyes with her hand to catch a glimpse of him. Unable to spot him, she headed for the house to freshen up a little before dinner and hide any possible evidence of having cried.

Trent’s footsteps came from around the side of the house. She caught her foot on an Adirondack chair. “Damn,” she exclaimed and fell to her knees.

“Maggie? Are you okay?” He gently rubbed her arms before helping her up.

“Yes. I’m fine.” She put her head down.

“You don’t look fine.” With his finger, he lifted her head by the chin. “You’ve been crying. Do you want to talk about it?”

“It was a little fall.” He stared into her eyes and held onto her arms. “Really, I’m fine.” She turned to go into the house. “I need to use the powder room.”

Refreshed, Maggie joined Trent on the patio where he worked at the grill.

“How do you like your steak?” he asked, pointing his tongs toward the grill.

“Medium.”

“Coming right up.”

“I want to explain about before.”

“Okay.”

“I had a great time today.”

“But?” he prodded with her pause.

“It hit me harder today than in the last few weeks. After my ride,” she hung her head at the thought, “your ranch reminds me so much of home.”

“You miss Texas.”

“I didn’t realize how homesick I truly am. I think it helped having Chloe here for a while. I keep busy with work, and now it sort of caught up with me. I’m sorry.”

“You have nothing to be sorry about. I’m glad you feel at home here.”

Trent came around the grill to her side. She took hold of him around his waist in an unromantic hug. They connected on a more personal and caring level. Before she stepped away from the embrace, she closed her eyes and inhaled the scent of soap.

“Have you talked to your parents?” He went back to the grill.

“My mother practically calls on a daily basis, but my dad is busy with work so I don’t get the chance to talk as often to him.” She hung her head. “I miss him.”

“Your dad?”

“I talked to him a lot back home. You know, Daddy’s little girl. I have him wrapped around my finger.” She held up her pinky.

“I never would have guessed.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” She hadn’t meant for it to come out as snidely as it had.
